A Stop-Start-Stop Success: The July Young Eagles Rally

Posted by EAA 790 Webmaster on July 16, 2012 at 6:50 PM Comments comments (0)

By Nancy Blazyk

The July 14th Young Eagle Rally started slowly as I awoke to thunder. I had mixed emotions about the rain as anything living in my yard is desperate for rain during the drought of 2012. Grabbing my phone to check the radar I proceeded to Lake in the Hills airport to confer with other 790 members on the situation. Should we continue to plan on having the Young Eagle Rally scheduled for the morning?

Your comments will help keep Young Eagles thriving

Please take a few moments to leave a comment on the FAA website in support of this exemption request before the EAA. The high price of fuel has made it more and more difficult for Young Eagles volunteer pilots to provide the flight that will inspire the future pilots of tomorrow. Click the link below for details of the exemption request and how you can help make it a reality!!

Safety Corner - Three Lousy Questions

Posted by EAA 790 Webmaster on May 18, 2012 at 9:30 PM Comments comments (0)

By Mike Perkins

Three lousy questions. That’s all it may take to determine whether or not you should go flying with a fellow pilot, whether that pilot has the mindset to keep you safe, to keep themselves safe, and to keep safe the people beneath the aircraft on the ground.

An accident near Lake-in-the-Hills Airport recently took the lives of a pilo...

Posted by EAA 790 Webmaster on May 18, 2012 at 8:50 PM Comments comments (0)

We have a very special, guest speaker this month -- Mr. Woody Woods joins us to share an exciting journey through a slice of aviation past. Woody shares his stories about aviation in his life. His aviation life started early and after the aviation  bug bit, it just never let go.

Hired at age 16 as a Line boy, pumping gas, washing planes and spinning props for $12 a week and an hour's worth of flying time, Woody Woods soloed at 16 in J-3 with a mere four (4) hours and 2...

Update on a Local Hero - The Final Chapter

Posted by EAA 790 Webmaster on May 7, 2012 at 3:20 PM Comments comments (0)

Captain Denny Fitch flew his last trip late last night.

Weather was overcast with light rain and thunderstorms reported in the area. Denny's family reported a fairly smooth ride although they individually experienced occasional bumpiness throughout the flight. Landing was a not-unexpected "Greaser."

The Senior ATC Controller assures us that Denny was "Cleared Direct" to his destinati...

Update on a Local Hero

Do you know Dennis "Denny" Fitch based at the Landings Condominium airport near Huntley, IL?

If the name doesn't quickly come to mind, you may remember a fateful day in Sioux City, IA back in 1989, when United Flight 232 violently lost its tail engine, and its hydraulic system. A passenger stepped forward and with his quick thinking controlled that crippled DC-10 by steering it with the throttles and the two remaining engines, fighting hard to safely guide that aircraft down...

Today, I met history.

Today, I met history.

Our EAA chapter's general meeting for March was getting ready to begin, and with handshakes and greetings I hurried to take my seat. I looked up to the front of the room, and there it was.

Before me stood screaming P-40 Warhawks over Africa, P-47 Thunderbolts over Italy, P-51 Mustangs over Austria. Before me stood guns blazing and bullets whizzing past enemy Focke-Wulfs a mile up in the sky. Before me were mission briefings announced t...

Project FlapJack is a Go

After a series of detailed meetings, and months of discussions of ideas and obstacles, the decision is in. EAA Chapter 790 will host a fly-in, pancake breakfast at Lake in the Hills airport.

A few months ago, our friends at the Lake in the Hills airport approached us with an idea of holding an event to build public awareness, bolster public relations, and to build future business in the aviation community. This presented an opportunity for Chapter 790 to spend a fun day at t...

March 3rd field trip to 3CK

Posted by RICH OLESZCZUK on March 14, 2012 at 12:35 AM Comments comments (2)

Saturday morning, March 3rd, had about a dozen people in Mike Carzoli’s hangar at Lake in the Hills airport. We were gathered near the tail of a 1967 Piper Cherokee 180, held up on jacks, in the beginning stages of its annual inspection. I am one of five co-owners of N9741J which is based at The Landings Airport in Huntley. Mike was hosting a clinic on the nuts-and-bolts of an annual, using our plane as a case-study.

Ole Sindberg started things off by discussing the u...

(This is a follow-up article regarding the Pancake Breakfast Project.)

EAA Chapter 790 is discussing the possibility of hosting a pancake breakfast fly-in event.

LITH airport has discussed helping to host the event either in part or possibly in whole, but would prefer that an organization host and run the service portion of the event.

The concepts being discussed at the moment are:

  • -Possible June 24th, 2012 event date
  • -Monetary c...

Are You Up for a Challenge?

It's a word we pilots hear quite often. So often, unfortunately, that its true nature is as overlooked as the air we breathe—We just don't think about it until it is not there.

Let's take a moment and look at the definition of safety. The dictionary tells us safety is:

  • -The state of freedom from the occurrence or risk of injury, danger, or loss
  • -The action of keeping secure from liability to harm, injury, dan...
